AmericanaUK live review POLLY & THE BILLETS DOUX + DAN WEBSTER & RACHEL BROWN, YORK CITY SCREEN, YORK, 25TH JULY 2013

Two bands for a fiver, what more could you want especially when they are as good as this, proper Yorkshire pricing.  Show opens Dan Webster and Racheal Brown are a great appetiser, their acoustic guitar/cello mix are great, powerful, classy and it’s a great act.  Brown’s cello, and her flawless playing do add a real touch of finesse to Webster’s singer/songwriter schtich, it’s a hybrid of Damien Rice, Seth Lakeman and Tom McRae, nothing really not to like.  They do a song about a “Grandfather and fishing” in which the cello soars, ebbing and flowing, bouncing us across the waves as Webster’s voice fills the sails on our trawler, alongside the Jimmy Macquire cover to open is a treat.  Mercifully he keeps the chat short, it’s a small room, a small audience, so that is well judged.  The closer, a cover of S” does leave you thinking you have seen the love lorn pair from the movie ‘Once’, good stuff, worth seeking out.
